I was asked a few days ago how the Cross channel map compares with other maps available, and how geographically accurate it is.

I did a quick, down & dirty comparison graphic with the CanonUK map and the in-game Normandy map.

The Normandy map:

.

The CanonUK map

Bear in mind that the CanonUK map is not 1:1 scale and I had to "scale" it to fit the Channel Map -- and it doesn't scale squarely, resulting in offset shorelines.

The Normandy map also had to be "scaled" to fit, although it scaled squarely.  The shoreline is accurate but the placement of airfields, rivers, and roads are fictional, no doubt to enhance playability.

Hey guys Ive just realised that on the map, Westhampnett appears to be slightly eastsoutheast of Tangemere when in actual fact it should be to the westnorthwest. Have the two fields been inadvertently swapped over or is there another explanation?

Thanks Pers, nice comparison.   Grin

Killerwatt, thanks for picking that up.  Actually its already been corrected.  This was an earlier version of the map when we had just identified what bases we were going to build and had just put the text there for placeholders.  Its since been correct.  However we will be making corrections on this right up until we release the map to the public, finding new things everyday.   Wink

Best regards,

Edited to remove the airfields ... the map is revised frequently as new airfields are added and placement is corrected.

Nice work on showing the differences between the maps.  One reason you will see slight deviations in the coast line are due to the projection methods used in the Space Shuttle Radar Terrain Mapping (SRTM) used in its creation and the maps you have compared it against.  If you rotate the maps you will get a better alignment but there will still be some slight differences.  One of the major problems of trying to represent a curved surface (the Earth) on a flat surface (paper) Grin

I chose to use WGS 84 which is the standard used by many maps in the UK area, Continental Europe tends to use ETRS89 which is a slight variation and will show some divergence when you lay the two on top of each other.  I cannot remember which method CanonUK used, it may even be one of the many other projection methods that are available.  Another reason I chose WGS84 is that our CAA maps are based on it, proper air navigation, well, for the UK anyway Grin

Clockwatcher, always great to see you my friend!!   Grin  SRTM sure has paid off, and from what I've noticed most of the other mappers have used it also.  And I just noticed we have a pretty big map!   Shocked
